The Toy Box, was inspired by composer Claude Debussy’s 1913 children’s ballet titled La Boîte à Joujoux. The story takes place in a toy box. Toy boxes are towns of a kind in which toys live like real people. Or perhaps towns are like toy boxes in which people live like toys. The dolls begin to dance. A soldier notices one of them and falls in love with her, but the doll has already given her heart to a lazy, good for nothing Polichinelle. The soldiers and the Polichinelles start a great battle in the course of which the poor soldier is seriously wonded. Deserted by the wicked Polichinelle, the doll takes the soldier home, nurses him and grows to love him. They marry, are very happy and have many children. The good for nothing Polichenelle becomes a park attendance and life goes on as before inside the toy box.
